Popping bugs for Smallmouth Bass…. Fantastic!

August 15th, 2010

Fly Fishing with popping bugs for Smallmouth Bass just might be at it’s peak right now on the North and South Fork of the Shenandoah. There is a lot of food for the smallmouth to feed on, from damselflies to frogs, throughout the day. Early and late fishing continues to be most productive but if mid-day is the time you can go, GO! Concentrate on the shaded banks and along the grassbeds in the river. This Smallmouth Bass took a #4 Chartreuse Chuggar on 3x tippet on an 8wt. fly rod.

Get The Lead Out

August 12th, 2010

When we tie our own heavy nymphs and streamers and those we sell we have stopped using lead wire, eyes and barbell eyes made of lead. There are now many substitutes availabe for these which do an excellent job of getting the flies down deeply but do not contaminate the streams.

Dry Clothes

August 10th, 2010

We were on a five mile smallmouth float in July when a day-long rain moved in. Two of the four of us did not have raincoats and by the time we floated the last three hours in the rain the two with no rain coats were dangerously chilled….yes, even in Virginia in July. When I’m floating a river I always carry a change of clothes and a rain coat in a waterproof dry bag in the boat. When I’m wading a stream I always have a raincoat in the back of my vest and a complete change of clothes in a duffel bag in my car.

Fishing Vest or Pouch?

August 5th, 2010

I use both a vest and a pouch but at different times. Both will easily carry all of the flies I need for a day or even a week. I decide which I’ll use on a specific trip based on my expected needs for the large items. I like a vest if I plan to carry a rain coat, lunch, single lens reflex camera with an extra lens and more than a small bottle of water. If I don’t need all of these items or if I’m floating a river in a boat where I carry these items in a dry boat bag I use my chest pouch.

Dry Flies in the Rain

August 3rd, 2010

The trout are very wary in the low streams from now to fall and we often spook those on feeding stations. However, when light to medium rain dimples the stream surface the trout are less wary and will taike your dry flies. Drift a Murray’s Flying Beetle size 16 or 18 over these trout and you’ll catch many of them.

Terrestrials and Smallmouth Bass

August 1st, 2010

Smallmouth Bass are well versed on the availability of terrestrial insects such as crickets and hoppers.  Fly Fishing these dead drifted along grassy banks with 18″ – 36″ of depth has produced many nice smallmouth bass for us.  Traditional patterns such as Shenk’s Cricket or the Letort Hopper will work quite well but I prefer one of our Bass Hoppers or Bass Crickets because they are a little more durable and tend to hold up a little better after two dozen fish or so.  With the low August flows typical in the mid-Atlantic, 3x tippet will prove to be beneficial.

Smallmouth Ledge Feeding Station

July 29th, 2010

From the middle of July through September you can catch many nice smallmouth bass upstream of the ledges lying across the Rivers. Those ledges which are flat on the upstream face with water six inches to a foot deep flowing over them provide perfect feeding stations if the water is two to four feet deep. Wade into the river 30-40 feet downstream of them and cast a Shenandoah Blue Popper 6 ten feet upstream of the ledge and strip it just slightly faster than the current. The strike usually comes when the Popper is a foot upstream of the ledge. Often I’ll wade and fish upstream for hours using this tactic.

Multi Fly Rig

July 29th, 2010

Sure they work. When I used to fish the Madison River with the late Charlie Brooks we would often fish three flies on the leader. Not only will you learn to catch trout but you will also learn to untangle the worst twisted leaders you’ve ever see. I’d suggest fishing a two fly rig for a season before you start fishing three flies at a time. This system is also very effective for smallmouth bass when you use a Mr. Rapidan Skater with a Red Squirrel Nymph.
