Interested in learning to fly fish? You will learn the ins and outs of fly fishing in a fun and relaxed atmosphere at one of our On-The-Stream Fly Fishing Schools. You will come away with an understanding of fly fishing for mountain trout or smallmouth bass, depending on which school you choose to attend, that would otherwise require many years of beating the water, reading volumes of books and watching hours of videos. Harry Murray began teaching these On-The-Stream Schools in 1965. Since that time Harry has worked out the kinks to arrive at what we feel is the best learning platform in all of Fly Fishing.
The Smallmouth Bass On-The-Stream Fly Fishing Schools are two day schools conducted from our fly shop in Edinburg, VA. Edinburg is centrally located for great access to both the North and South Forks of the Shenandoah and is 2 hours from Washington, DC, Roanoke, VA and Harrisburg, PA. We are blessed to have great access to several farms and tracts of land which are situated on prime stretches of both rivers. What will you
experience? The first day typically starts at 9:00 am with an interactive presentation on Fly Fishing with an emphasis on Smallmouth Bass. We cover : equipment (rod, reel, line, leaders, flies, wading gear, etc.), knot tying, wading safety,
entomology, reading water, casting and much more than I can list here. We will then help you with fly and gear
selection should you need anything (we provide Rod/ Reel/ Line/ Leader Outfits for each angler). From the fly shop we drive to the river. Once on the river we will cover casting and then work one-on-one with each angler as you apply what you have learned in hopes of catching a smallmouth bass. The Mountain Trout On-The-Stream Fly Fishing Schools are all two day schools and are conducted on a native Brook Trout stream within the Shenandoah National Park of Virginia, 40 miles east of our fly shop. What will you experience? Day one starts off at 9:00am with an interactive presentation on Fly Fishing for Mountain Trout where we cover equipment selection, casting on these mountain streams, entomology, reading the water, proper fly selection, and how to fish dry’s, nymphs, and streamers under various circumstances. Many of the fine points covered in Harry’s book, Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park Revised 2010 ($13.95) are covered in detail in these
schools. After the classroom presentation we drive to the
stream where you will apply what you learned in the hopes of catching a beautiful native Brook Trout. We work one-on-one with each student once on the stream to ensure you learn what you want to learn. All Mountain Trout Schools are held on Weekdays. The fishing we encounter in these schools lends itself best to 2, 3 and 4 weight fly rods 6 1/2 to 8 feet long. Heavier line sizes or longer rods tend to leave us at a disadvantage. Rod/ Reel/ Line/ Leader outfits are available for your use in these schools and we strongly recommend using our equipment on the first day.
