Mr. Rapidan© Parachute Dry Fly
Size 14, 16, 18, 20 |
Mr. Rapidan© Dry Fly
Size 12, 14, 16, 18 |
This is the most popular dry fly we sell. The bright wing makes it highly visible to the angler, it floats like a cork, its body and hackle color let us successfully match the natural Quill Gordon, March Brown, Little Yellow Stonefly and Little Olives. The Parachute style presents the light pattern of the naturals. The popularity is well justified by its success in a broad variety of situations. |
This is the original pattern that spawned the other six flies in this series and is still the first dry fly of choice by many anglers across this country. In the fifteen years since we first put this on the market, a good indication of the anglers' success with the Mr. Rapidan is the frequency with which an order for several flies "to try" is quickly followed by an order for a dozen of each in several sizes. |

Spirit of Pittsford Mills |
| This was the favorite trout dry fly of Ben Schley who was a great fisherman and a very special friend. It's one of the few flies that honestly passes for natural mayflies, caddisflies and stoneflies. Effective from April until November. |

Hair Wing Dry Flies |
These are tough, high floating flies which are great in full stream conditions. The Coachman Trude is one of my favorites on the mountain trout streams. |

Spring Creek and Tailwater Dry Flies & Midges |
When trout feed heavily on a specific hatch they can be very selective in which artificial flies they will accept. Below is a list of the flies I turn to when I encounter this. I'm especially fond of the no hackle patterns on Beatis hatches and sometimes go to these on the Sulphur hatch on both the spring creeks and the mountain streams is Ed Shenk's Sulphur. |

Mr. Rapidan Midge Dry and
Crippled Midge© |
| Here are two midges that will fool those trout which are feeding on natural chironmids and the yellow wings enable us to see them in all conditions even though they are very small. |

Murray's Yellow Drake Dry Fly
Size 14, 16
$2.50 |
The Professor was Jack Sperry's favorite trout fly. Jack was one of the most accomplished anglers in the country and he used this to match mayflies, stoneflies, and caddisflies. This is very effective all season.
New--Available Jan. 2008 |
This style tie was my favorite when I started trout fishing in the 60's and it seldom lets me down. The tube elk hair body helps it float like a cork and produces a perfect light pattern of the natural mayflies. Use this as a searching pattern and to match the naturals from the middle of April until fall. New--Available Jan. 2008 |

Troth's Elk Hair Caddis |
This is one of our greatest trout flies because of the abundance of natural caddisflies throughout the season. |

| I use more of these drys than I do the standard drys becasue I believe I catch more fish on them. |
 |
Terrestrials |
| After the spring hatches become sparse the trout feed heavily on terrestrials because it's the only game in town. In order to get the best action I choose the terrestrial pattern and size to match the naturals I see along the stream. I have, however, observed a natural biological sequence that helps guide me. The first terrestrials I see are the black ants followed closely by cinnamon ants, the beetles and houseflies show up next, then the inchworms and crickets and by July the hoppers are on. I also try to match the terrestrials I use to the natural cover along the streams. For example, I use ants where I find many tree limbs over the streams because these sprinkle the naturals onto the stream. Houseflies and beetles are great where there are leafy shrubs along the streams. Shenk's Cricket is my choice when the mountain wasps are out and in streams along pasture and hay fields. These fields also produce many grasshoppers and I like to fish Shenk's Letort Hopper tight against the undercut banks. |
Ants |
| Many trout eat more ants than any other single insect. This could explain thei willingness to take our Ant patterns when they investigate but refuse regular flies. The problem arises with thie selectivity to certain patterns and the low fly visibilty to us. |

Letort Hopper Dry (Shenk)
Size 12, 14, 16 |
Dave's Hopper Dry
Size 8, 10, 12, 14 |
This is my favorite Hopper pattern for the toughest trout. These are equally
effective for the trout you see rising or for just fishing the water in order to
cover all likely feeding stations. Since many trout seemingly lie in ambush
waiting for natural hoppers to fall onto the stream I like to ply my Hoppers
tight against the banks. |
This is the most realistic hopper we have even down to the kicking legs. This is a very durable ties and thus lends itself well to smallmouths as well as trout. The sizes 6, 8, and 10 are exceptionally productive for the bass in the Shenandoah River in Summer. Fish them tight against the banks with a very slow leg-kicking action. |

| This is a hackled pattern which has been popular on large streams for many years because of its high visibilty. A good friend likes to fish wet as well as dry. Says he takes more fish on it underwater. |

| The success of this pattern has been a well kept secret by many master anglers for years! This fly will fool big trout in both spring creeks and freestone streams. |
