Fly Casting Workshop

Are you interested in learning to fly fish? Are you already a flyfishing addict and want to learn some more about it?  Maybe you want to learn the joy of tying your own flies. Learn how to fly fish for Trout, Bass and much more with our fun and interactive fly fishing lessons.  Check out our Fly Fishing Workshops, we cover topics from Spring Creek Trout Fly Fishing and Smallmouth Bass Fly Fishing to Nymphing for Trout and Fly Tying.   The Fly Fishing Workshops are held at Murray’s Fly Shop in beautiful downtown Edinburg, VA (90 minutes from the Capital Beltway) on Saturdays through winter and early spring from 10a.m. to noon.  We cover a broad variety of topics for trout fishing, smallmouth bass fishing, fly rod casting, fly line care and fly tying. Harry Murray, author of 14 books, and owner/ founder of Murray’s Fly Shop teaches attendees in these fun and interactive fly fishing workshops.
The cost is $20 per person.

Learn to Fly Cast & Rig Tackle Workshop
Saturday, April 9, 2016 |10a.m. to noon
Learn to Fly Fish!  This two hour workshop will teach you how to perform all of the standard casts as well as roll casts, curve casts and shooting line.  This part of the workshop is taught on our casting lawn.  The second part is conducted in our fly shop in Edinburg, VA and will show you how to rig your tackle including the knots to use when putting your line and backing on a fly reel.  We provide the rods and reels for this workshop or if you would prefer to practice with your own rod and reel outfit, you are more than welcome to bring it.

Fly Tying Workshop

Basic Fly Tying Workshop

Learn to Tie Your Own Flies!  Many anglers find it enjoyable to spend the winter months tying their flies for the next years fishing season.  This two hour workshop will teach you how to tie dry flies, nymphs, streamers and deer hair bass bugs that are effective all across the country.  This is a very basic workshop that is geared toward beginners and for those that just want to brush up on their techniques.  We do not supply the materials for this workshop.  You can purchase one of our basic fly tying kits, bring your own materials, or just watch as I tie the sample flies.


Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park Workshop

Learn to Fly Fish! This two hour workshop will feature a slide show and a map review of the Shenandoah National Park in order to share with you my 40 years of fishing in the Park.  My goal is to help you find the best streams, tactics, and flies so that you may enjoy the Park and its trout fishing as much as I do.

Smallmouth Fishing on the Shenandoah River Workshop

In this two hour workshop I will show you the access points (on our master map) of the North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River in order to help you find the best smallmouth fishing throughout the year.  I will also use a slide show that will cover the best tactics and flies to use in the Shenandoah River throughout the different water levels and feeding habits of the bass.

Mastering Trout Fishing Workshop

This two hour workshop includes a slide show and lecture that will give you a thorough understanding of the techniques, tackle, and flies used in all trout streams from the small streams in the East to the large rivers in the Rockies. Using our master maps and the books I have written over the years, I will show you the locations of many of our best trout streams.

Catching Large Bass on Streamers Workshop
Saturday, March 12, 2016 |10am. to noon
Learn to Fly Fish!  This two hour workshop features a slide show and a discussion of tackle and new flies that will help you learn how to catch large bass with streamers by using new tactics. Harry will discuss the streamers that he has designed over the last 50 years and which work best for him during the different river conditions.
