April Mountain Trout Fly Special
April is a wonderful month for dry fly fisherman. There are five mayfly hatches, two stonefly hatches and one caddisfly hatch. There is no reason to carry hundreds of different dry flies in order to catch the trout because the Epeorus pleuralis and the Stenonema vicarium (our heaviest mayfly hatches) are very well matched with the Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14.
The Mr. Rapidan Dry in size 14 is equally effective in covering the water if the hatch is sparse, in fishing to rising trout when the duns are on, and fishing to rising trout on the spinner fall. This effectively matches the hatch and is easy to see on the stream.
Several years ago we had an Epeorus pleuralis hatch which was unbelievably heavy with each pool having 6 to 8 trout feeding on the naturals. If you enjoy fishing a variety of drys, just to see what the trout will take--here are some that I do well with. Blue Quill size 16, Spirit of Pittsford Mills size 14, Murray's Professor size 14, Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis, Olive size 14.
