The shallow tails of the pools always hold large populations of minnows that apparently feel safe during the bright portions of the day since the bass seem unwilling to feed here in the bright daylight.
The water in the very tails of the pools is one to two feet deep and it holds large populations of minnows which the smallmouth feed heavily upon. Frequently I see the wake of the bass as they race in after the minnows and I shoot my fly right in front of them.
After I complete fishing the tail of the pool, I wade slowly upstream as far as the depth of the water permits and fan my casts over all of the water I can reach and swim my streamer back downstream.
