The fish are still there and they still have to eat, but you have to change the way you approach them. The first thing I do is slow down and become much more careful about getting into the water. In low, clear water, smallmouth can see and hear you much easier due to the lack of current and color. I like to stay farther away from the fish and make longer casts whenever possible.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI also like to change my flies when the water gets low and clear. This is a good time to use smaller poppers, sliders, and terrestrial flies around shaded banks and grass beds. As the sun gets higher, I usually spend more time working smaller streamers (size 6 and smaller), crayfish patterns, and nymphs between ledges and around current seams. I don't try to cover the river as quickly as I would when the water is higher. Instead, I fish the best-looking water carefully and give each cast a chance to work.
