| This bug has a fat body and deeply cut face that lets us fish it with a loud action when we need to attract the bass'es attention. I go to the Chuggar where the riffles dump into the pools and use a stripping-bobbing retrieve to make it act like a dying minnow. It is also my choice for fishing the four to five foot deep cuts along the banks where the loud action often brings violent strikes. |
| BIG BITE POPPERS I started experimenting with these big poppers last summer and was very impressed with the size bass I caught on them and their durability. Weedless with rubber legs. These are referred to as size 10 but because of the deep bite and long hook made just for bass, they are actually size 4 bug bodies. |
| Wounded minnows The easiest meal for a bass to grab are wounded minnows which are struggling helplessly along the surface of the river. Usually that splashy rise you see along a grassbed, or in the tail of a pool at dusk or just below a riffle is a bass capturing a dying minnow. In an attempt to develop special minnow patterns to cash in on this great action we experimented with many different styles of ties, shapes, materials and even different hooks with several of the finest fly tyers in the country. The series we now have are even more productive than I had ever expected. The more you experiment with these the more great fishing you will find as we discovered while tweaking these patterns this past summer. |
Whitlock's Deer Hair Bass Bugs |
| By blending his fishing knowledge, artistic talents and tying skills Dave Whitlock has developed the following series of outstanding hair bugs which are very productive all across the country. |
Smallmouth Bass Dry Flies |
| From May until October many smallmouths feed on natural mayflies, caddiflies and terrestrials and matching these with our flies can give us great fishing. Last summer there were so many large grasshoppers along the rivers we decided to develop a special pattern to take advantage of this bounty. The New Murray's Bass Hopper can be fished wth a very tantalizing action which foold many large bass that pass up regular flies. |

This is the most realistic hopper we have even down to the kicking legs. This is a very durable ties and thus lends itself well to smallmouths as well as trout. The sizes 6, 8, and 10 are exceptionally productive for the bass in the Shenandoah River in Summer. Fish them tight against the banks with a very slow leg-kicking action. |
This is my favorite terrestrial pattern, and if I were restricted to only one terrestrial this would be it. And not only does this mimic real crickets better than any pattern I've ever found, but it also passes quite well for some wasp we have on many of our mountain streams. Shenk's Cricket is tied by Ed Shenk. |
Smallmouth Skater Dry Flies |
| Fishing skaters for smallmouth bass is definitely one of the most exciting forms of fishing you can find. The Mr. Rapidan is the finest overall smallmouth dry fly I've ever used. Last year the Blue Damsel Skater became an effective addition so this year we've added the new Murray's Olive Dragonfly Sakter to match the action of the many natural dragonflies that buzz the rivers. Dress there liberally with silicone cream and skate them over the tails of pools at dusk and over the deep cuts between the ledges. |
messinger frog |
| This was the original kicking frog which the late master angler Joe Messinger perfected on his smallmouth waters in West Virginia. Fortunately his son Joe Messinger, Jr. is kind enough to share these with us today. If you want a touch of tradition, quality bug construction and a real bass-catching bug, this is it. |
Edgewater Foam Poppers |
| The soft texture of these poppers presents a life-like feel to the bass which encourages them to hold onto them longer than they might a hard head bug. This gives us a little longer to set the hook. These are very light and responsive on the water and cast quite well. |
