About Murray’s Fly Shop

Fly Fishing Virginia in the Shenandoah Valley Since 1962

Welcome to Murray’s Fly Shop, located in Edinburg, Virginia, in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. Founded by Harry Murray in May 1962, our fly shop has been helping anglers enjoy fly fishing for more than 60 years.

We specialize in fly fishing for trout and smallmouth bass in Virginia, while also helping anglers prepare for fishing trips throughout the country. Our shop offers fly fishing gear, flies, fly rods and reels, tying materials, instruction, and the practical advice that comes from years of fishing the waters we know best.

We are also the home of the Mr. Rapidan Series of Flies, created by Harry Murray in 1971 for fishing the mountain streams of Virginia.

Our Story

Harry Murray opened Murray’s Fly Shop in May 1962 in Edinburg, Virginia. What began as a small local fly shop grew through the years into a destination for anglers traveling to fish the Shenandoah Valley, Shenandoah National Park, and surrounding mountain streams and rivers.

Harry's approach has always been practical: fish the water, learn what works, and share that knowledge with other anglers. That philosophy continues to influence the way we select our flies and equipment, teach fly fishing, and help customers prepare for their time on the water.

More than six decades later, Murray’s Fly Shop remains a family-run fly fishing business with a strong connection to the local waters and the anglers who fish them. Generations of fishermen and women have stopped through our doors, and many have returned year after year.

Fly Fishing the Shenandoah Valley

The Shenandoah Valley is home to some of Virginia’s best fly fishing, including native brook trout streams, stocked trout waters, and excellent smallmouth bass rivers. We spend much of our time fishing these waters and enjoy helping anglers discover the techniques, flies, and equipment that work here.

Whether you're planning a day on a small mountain stream in Shenandoah National Park, fishing for smallmouth bass on the Shenandoah River, or traveling to Virginia from Washington, DC, Maryland, Pennsylvania, or beyond, we're happy to help you plan your trip.

Learn to Fly Fish

We offer fly fishing schools, classes, and workshops for anglers of all skill levels. Our programs include instruction in fly casting, trout fishing, smallmouth bass fishing, fly tying, and other practical skills that help you become a better angler.

We also offer guided fly fishing trips for anglers who want to spend time on the water with someone familiar with the local trout streams and smallmouth bass rivers.

Whether you're learning the basics of fly casting, trying to improve your presentation, or exploring new waters in the Shenandoah Valley, our goal is simple: help you become a more confident and successful fly angler.

Fly Fishing Gear We Trust

We carry a carefully selected range of fly fishing rods, reels, flies, fly lines, leaders, waders, fly tying materials, and fishing accessories. Many of the products we sell have been used by us for years on the water.

Our fly fishing equipment includes products from brands such as:

Simply put, we sell the gear we fish. We look for equipment that performs well on the water, holds up to regular use, and gives our customers good value for their money.
