Murray's Fly Shop Exclusive Streamers |
| Big trout and big bass feed heavily upon minnows so we are constantly striving to offer the most effective streamers and bucktails we can develop. These include many of our standard exclusive patterns as well as newly developed ties. Introduced last year, the dying minnows, eel pattern, and Betsy streamer have been quite productive throughout the season. |

Yes, large bass eat little bass and they hit this bucktail pattern quickly. Cast this in tight against the banks where the water is two to three feet deep over a stream bottom composed of marble-sized stones and strip it out very slowly. |
Many smallmouth bass rivers have great populations of fall fish and they are an important food source for the bass. At dusk and dawn fish these below the riffles and in the tails of the pools. During the rest of the day fish them along the shaded banks and in the deep runs. |

Murray's Tadpole Streamer©
Size 4
$2.75
 |
The late Joe Brooks introduced me to the orginial Blond series many years ago and they have given me many nice bass. By adding more flash and perch colors we have a new bucktail that is outstanding. Fish these around the islands and along the bank with a slow six inch stripping action. |
This streamer looks and acts like a real tadpole. Fish this with a slow stripping action along the drop offs where the mud-bottom flats meet the main currents in the river and where slow back waters flow into the river. |

Murray's Madtom - Sculpin©
Size 4, 6, 8
$3.25
 |
This is the most consistent fly I know for taking large smallmouth bass. Swim this slowly along the stream bottom in the riffles, runs and deep pools with a very slow line hand stripping action at a down and across stream angle. We tie this with lead eyes to take it down quickly and to enhance its natural diving action during the retrieve. I have several friends who seldom use any other fly than this when they are big fish hunting. |
| |
| These deep-running Dying Minnows are great matches for these three natural minnows as they struggle along the stream bottom. Fish them across stream with a very slow six-inch stripping action. |

This is a modern version of the original pattern that was one of the most successful and popular on many trout streamers fifty years ago. It reguarly takes a big trout when other patterns fail. |

Coleman's Purple Passion©

 |
| This exciting smallmouth streamer is very effective in all streams. Fish it deeply with a slow stripping action. Designed by one of our guides, John Coleman. |

Murray's Shiner Streamer©
Size 6, 8
$2.95 |
Bass feed heavily upon small sunfish and we've had outstanding success with this pattern. Fish them in tight to the banks and around grass beds with a very slow stripping action. |
This pattern is my favorite shiner streamer to use if the water is too fast or too deep to easily get the Silver Outcast down deeply. I like to fish these tight against the deep grass beds and drop offs at the edges of the gravel bars. |

 |
Murray's Chub Streamer©
Size 6, 8
$2.95
 |
We fish these chub minnows in the cuts between ledges, in open pools and below riffles with great results. The slower and deeper you can fish them the bigger fish you'll catch. Equally effective for both trout and bass. |
Standard Streamers |
Streamers are very effective flies to use when you want to cover a lot of water in a hurry. The Zonkers and Mylar Minnows below work quite well for this because they pass for a broad variety of minnows. A different approach is to select specific streamers which match the minnows found in the specific water you are fishing. The Sculpins Streamers and Spuddlers are excellent patterns to use below the riffles where the real sculpin minnows live. |

 |
Shenk's Sculpin
Size 4, 6, 8
$2.95
Master angler Ed Shenk developed this outstanding pattern after many years of fishing and experimenting with various patterns on many of the world's best streams. Equally effective for both trout and bass. |
Shenk's White Streamer
Size 4, 6, 8
$2.75
Ed has an outstanding chub minnow pattern here and I use it for both trout and bass. |

 |
Whitlock's Sculpin
Size 4, 6
$4.15
As you would expect from Dave, these are the most realistic sculpins we have. Since all fish show unexplained preferences in just which sculpin they will take on specific days this is one the three patterns I carry all the time - the other two being Shenk's Sculpin and the Spuddler. |
Whitlock's Near Nuff Sculpin
Size 4, 6
$2.60
If the currents are strong or the water is deep this is your ticket for showing your fly to those fish holding along the stream bottom. It's lead eyes and soft materials aid us greatly in presenting these fish a realistic pattern within their grasp.-Don't go lighter than a 2X leader with this streamer, or you may snap off a big fish on the strike. |

 |
Woolly Bugger/Flash-A-Bugger
|
| These are some of the most popular streamers for both bass and trout in both lakes and streams. The standard line hand stripping action is by far the most popular method of handling these flies. |

Clouser Deep Minnows |
| These are well designed streamers by an angler who knows his business. They are equally effective in freshwater and saltwater all across the country. The standard retrieve is a firm line hand stripping action which induces a pulsating action to the bucktail thus making the streamer look and act like real minnows and bait fish. |

Spuddler
Size 4, 6, 8
$2.75
 |
| This was the first of our modern realistic sculpin streamers. It has been one of my favorite patterns ever since Red Monical gave me a few over twenty years ago, explaining that he and Donnie Williams were trying to come up with a better streamer to fool the big bull head-feeding browns on the Yellowstone River. It was an instant success on those browns and still is. In fact, I carry about three dozen of these with me to Montana on each trip.-Pleasantly, I discovered my smallmouths in the East went for this streamer with the same gusto the trout in the West did. Today, I always carry the Spuddlers in both my trout vest and bass vest. |
D.L.'s Mylar Minnow
These are the most attractive new streamers I've ever seen. They are tied exclusively for us to our specifications and are equally effective for bass, trout, and panfish. |

This is the fly to use when you see bass chasing minnows over shallow gravel bars and along aquatic grass beds where the water is less than three feet deep. If the water is over three feet deep or the current is strong the new Murray's Shiner is more productive. |

 |
James Wood Bucktail©
Size 2, 4
$2.75 |
| When I hijacked this one of Pete Perinchief's bonefish flies from a trip to Bermuda, I had no idea how effective it would be on smallmouths; I was just too thrifty to stick them on the shelf until my next bonefish trip. Many of the anglers who use this fly extensively believe the bass hit it because they mistake it for a small sunfish. This could well be the case because when the small sunfish are hatching off the beds I make some phenomenal catches on this fly. My best tactic is to wade downstream about fifty feet off the banks and cast the James Wood Bucktail in tight against the banks and slowly strip the fly out. Tied on a short shank hook. |
 |
 |
Mr. Rapidan Streamer©
Size 6, 8, 10
$2.65 |
| The exceptional effectiveness of the Mr. Rapidan series prompted us to develop a streamer. Little did we anticipate just how productive it would be for both bass and trout. Speculations are that they take it for a young sunfish. |
 |
Shenandoah Epoxy Streamer© |
| In very clear water the bass are apparently fooled by the very realistic appearance of these two streamers. The Epoxy Shiners are very effective when fished around grass beds and along the edge of gravel bars. The Epoxy Perch will give you great results when worked along the banks, the islands and on the edges of slow portions of the rivers. |
