Learn to Fly Fish! This two hour workshop(held in person in classroom setting--not on stream)will feature a slide show and a map review of the Shenandoah National Park in order to share with you my 40+ years of fishing in the Park. My goal is to help you find the best streams, tactics, and flies so that you may enjoy the Park and its trout fishing as much as I do. The Shenandoah National Park asked me to write a book on the Park many years ago, to which I did. This book is the official book for the Park--Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park by Harry Murray. By using this book and the maps we have in the fly shop I can help you find some of the best streams to fish in the Shenandoah National Park. You will not be on the stream for this class. February 14, 2026
Join us at Murray’s Fly Shop for an immersive Fly Tying Class focused on one of the most important aquatic insects in our native brook trout streams — the caddisfly. Whether you're a seasoned fly angler or just starting your tying journey, this hands-on workshop will deepen your understanding of the caddisfly life cycle and teach you how to tie three highly effective caddis patterns used across the Blue Ridge Mountains and beyond.
What You’ll Learn:
In this class, we’ll explore the complete life cycle of the caddis — from pupa to adult — and how to match each stage with realistic, proven fly patterns. You’ll gain insight into when and how to fish each fly, with a special focus on targeting native brook trout during key hatches.
Flies You’ll Tie:
- Murray’s Caddis Pupa – Olive
A go-to imitation for the early stages of the hatch, this olive-bodied pattern is deadly in the weeks leading up to peak emergence. - Murray’s Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle – Olive
Ideal for imitating the emerging caddis, often represented by a splashy rise as the fish chase the naturals up from the bottom of the stream. - Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis Dry Fly – Tan
One of our most popular and productive dry flies, this pattern rides high and brings explosive topwater strikes during the evening caddis flights.
Why Take This Class?
- Hands-on instruction from experienced fly tyers and guides who fish these patterns locally.
- All tying materials provided during the class — just bring your favorite vise and tools
- Small class size ensures individual attention and a relaxed learning environment.
- Take home three expertly tied flies — and the skills to tie many more.
2/21/26 Mayfly Life Cycle Fly Tying Class

February 21, 2026
Join us at Murray’s Fly Shop for an immersive Mayfly Life Cycle Fly Tying Class, where you'll learn to tie three essential patterns that mimic the complete life cycle of the mayfly—one of the most important insects in a trout’s diet.
In this hands-on class, you’ll master the art of tying the legendary Mr. Rapidan series, created by Harry Murray himself. You'll walk away with three highly effective flies, each designed to imitate a specific stage of the mayfly’s transformation:
- Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph – Representing the underwater stage, this weighted nymph gets down fast and triggers strikes from feeding trout.
- Mr. Rapidan Emerger – Learn to tie this transitional pattern that imitates the mayfly as it rises to the surface, a favorite target for selective fish.
- Mr. Rapidan Dry Fly – A classic Appalachian pattern that floats high and fools even the wariest trout during a hatch.
Whether you're a beginner looking to build your skills or an experienced tier aiming to refine your technique, this class will deepen your understanding of fly design, presentation, and hatch-matching strategy.
