Trout Fly Fishing Report- February 20, 2017

Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report- Murray’s Fly Shop Mountain Trout Streams: Due to the present warm weather, the mountain trout streams are warm enough to fish. Come into the heads of the streams from the Blue Ridge Parkway, National Forest Roads and Skyline Drive. The best flies now are the Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 14, Spirit of Pittsford Mills size 14 and Murray’s Professor Dry size 14. Delayed Harvest and Large Trout Streams: As the large streams begin getting warmer, the natural minnows become active. They are thus exposed to the trout who feed aggressively upon them. Many of these trout feed in the deep pockets below the riffles where an upstream bounce retrieve with the Murray’s Pearl Marauder size 10, Murray’s Black Marauder size 10 and Murray’s Chartreuse Marauder size 10 are all effective. The materials and tying style we use enable these flies to produce a very realistic minnow action with this jigging action. Check out our Mountain Trout On The Stream Fly Fishing Schools and Saturday Fly Fishing Workshops.

Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report- Murray’s Fly Shop Mountain Trout Streams: The mountain trout streams are too cold for good fishing. Delayed Harvest Trout Streams and Stocked Trout Streams: One of my most effective tactics for catching large trout in cold water is to use a Scientific Anglers Sink Tip III Fly Line.  I use a Murray’s Fluorocarbon 6 foot 3X Sinking Line Leader to fish a Bitch Creek Nymph size 8 or a Mr. Rapidan Olive Soft Hackle size 8 deeply. The deepest pools on the Smith River at Bassett and on the Hidden Valley of the Jackson hold many large trout. Check out our Mountain Trout Fly Fishing Schools and Saturday Fly Fishing Workshops.

Trout Fly Fishing Report- Murray’s Fly Shop- Edinburg, Virginia Mountain Trout Streams: The mountain trout streams are too cold for good fishing. Delayed Harvest and Stocked Trout Streams: Even in cold streams you can often catch some large trout by fishing large nymphs deeply. The Bitch Creek Nymph size 8 and the Mr. Rapidan Olive Soft Hackle Nymph size 8 both often produce very well for me. One good winter tactic is to fish these upstream dead drift in the deep pockets below the riffles in streams like the Hidden Valley of the Jackson and Big Stoney Creek. Check out our Mountain Trout Fly Fishing Schools and Saturday Fly Fishing Workshops.

Murray’s Fly Shop Mountain Trout, Stocked Trout and Delayed Harvest Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report Mountain Trout Streams: The mountain trout streams are too cold for good fishing. Stocked Trout Streams and Delayed Harvest Streams: A good way to cover the best runs and pools thoroughly and match the natural foods the trout are feeding upon is to fish a Murray’s Shenandoah Skunk Simple Streamer size 10. Fish this on a Murray’s Classic 9 foot 4X Leader. Then come off the bend of the streamer hook with two feet of 5X tippet material. Then attach a Murray’s Adams Nymph size 12 to this. Fish this deeply across stream with a very slow stripping action. This is very effective on Passage Creek, Big Stoney Creek and Back Creek. Trout Fly Fishing Report- January 17, 2017

Murray’s Fly Shop Mountain Trout/Large Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report Mountain Trout Streams: The mountain trout streams are too cold for good fishing. Large Trout Streams and Delayed Harvest Streams: A great way to take advantage of the exciting midge fishing now is to fish a two-fly rig. Use a Mr. Rapidan Midge Dry size 18 or a Birchell’s Hatching Midge size 20 on a Murray’s Classic 9 foot 6X Leader. Then come off the bend of that hook with twenty four inches of 7X using an improved clinch knot. To this attach a Bead Head Copper John Zebra size 18. Fish this dead drift where you see rising trout. If you do not see riseforms fish this rig across stream in the slowest parts of the pools with a very slow twitching action. Mountain Trout, Large Trout, Delayed Harvest Streams Fly Fishing Report Mountain Trout Streams: The mountain trout streams are too cold for good fishing. Large Trout Streams and Delayed Harvest Streams There are some good midge hatches now on Passage Creek, Big Stoney Creek and Back Creek. The trout are currently feeding on these midges. Watch for feeding trout. Then taper down to 6X or 7X and go one on one with each trout. Do this by using a Mr. Rapidan Midge Dry size 18 or Birchell’s Hatching Midge size 20 if you see a delicate riseform. If you see a splashy riseform use a Bead Head Zebra Copper John size 18. Trout Fly Fishing Report- January 3, 2017

Trout Fly Fishing Report- Murray’s Fly Shop- Edinburg, Virginia Mountain Trout Streams: The mountain trout streams are too cold for good fishing. Large Trout Streams and Delayed Harvest Streams: Some of the best fishing on these streams now is downstream of where the springs enter them. These springs are five to six degrees warmer than the main stream. The rich pH prompts excellent cress bug and shrimp growth. Fishing these areas with Cress Bug size 14, Murray’s Shrimp size 16 and Shenandoah Sowbug size 16 is very effective at this time of year.  Big Stoney West of Edinburg, Back Creek and the Bullpasture all three have many of these springs. These are easy to locate by the rich green weed growth in them and downstream of them. Trout Fly Fishing Report- December 27, 2016

Murray’s Fly Shop Trout Fly Fishing Report- December 27, 2016 Mountain Trout Streams: The brook trout are spawning now and most serious anglers believe it is best not to stress them by fishing for them now even though we plan to return them to the stream. Large Trout Streams and Delayed Harvest Streams: I checked the springs flowing into our streams several days ago. I found two positive factors that will help give us good fishing now. First, these springs are six degrees warmer than the main stream. Second, the springs are loaded with natural cress bugs and shrimp. Fish the Cress Bug size 14, Shenandoah Sowbug size 16 or Murray’s Shrimp size 16 below these springs and you will will catch some nice trout. Three of my favorite streams for this type action are Big Stoney Creek in Edinburg, the Bullpasute and Back Creek. Murray’s Fly Shop Trout Fly Fishing Report Mountain Trout Streams: The brook trout are spawning now and most serious anglers believe it is best not to stress them by fishing for them now even though we plan to return them to the stream. Large Trout Streams and Delayed Harvest Streams: Some anglers are seeing many large rainbows in our stocked trout streams but they are having trouble. By the time we see them, we have already spooked them. A good ploy is to wade slowly and concentrate on the high gradient areas where the trout are less wary. Flies that are working well now are Murray’s Chartreuse Marauder size 10, Murray’s Pearl Marauder size 10 and Mr. Rapidan Streamer size 10. The Hidden Valley of the Jackson and the Smith River at Bassett are both producing well now.
