Introduction to Fly Fishing

Using a slide presentation we will give you the basic information you need to understand the various forms of fly fishing which is available to you. We will show you the fishing which you can find in mountain trout streams, trout spring creeks, large western trout rivers, bass rivers and in the saltwater. We will show you the rods, reels, and lines which are used in the various forms of this fly fishing. We will discuss the many angling tools which we use regularly and the waders and wading shoes which are useful. Using specific examples we will show you the numerous flies you can use in all of these forms of fly fishing. With this information you will be able to select the types of fly fishing which you expect to be the most gratifying.

Smallmouth fly fishing offers a broad variety of options which can meet the expectations of anglers of all skill levels. Using an in-depth slide show we will show you how to fish for smallmouth bass with streamers, nymphs, surface bugs and dry flies. The various water levels one encounters from spring to fall influence the feeding habits of the bass so we will show you the best tactics to use in numerous conditions. Using specific examples we will show you the rod, reels, lines and tackle which work best for smallmouth fly fishing. We have developed many new flies for smallmouth bass so we will discuss when, where and how to fish these as well as the standard flies. With specific maps and my books we will show you the best areas to fish for smallmouth bass.

This workshop starts by teaching you how to cast on our casting lawn. We provide the fly rods and reels for you to use. We then return to our fly shop where we will teach you how to correctly tie all of the knots you need in fly fishing. We cover how to correctly select and balance your tackle for the type fishing you plan to do and to the specific flies you will use. We will discuss many fine points which will enable you to care for your tackle on the stream so you will be able to land those large fish.

This is my favorite trout fishing in the east as well as in the Rockies. Many believe this is the most demanding and gratifying form of trout fishing. Using a new slide presentation we will show you the best tactics for fishing dry flies, nymphs and streamers on spring creeks throughout the country. Special information will be provided on the best flies and tactics to use on matching the hatches on these streams. Because of the delicacy and accuracy needed on these streams we will cover the special tackle we use on spring creeks.

Taking tough trout on dry flies which are selectively feeding on specific natural insects is very challenging and rewarding. In this workshop we will use a slide show presentation in order to show you the fine points of fishing dry flies that match the natural mayflies, caddisflies, stoneflies and terrestrial insects which the trout feed upon. In order to achieve a natural drift with your flies we will show you the proper use of the “puddle cast”, “lazy S cast”, and “bounce cast”. We will show you the best rods, reels, lines, leaders and tackle for successful dry fly fishing.

The Dynamics of Nymph Fishing for Trout|Jan 4-2014|10a.m. to 12p.m.
During periods of high water and cold water artificial nymphs often give us our best fishing. Also some anglers enjoy the challenges of fishing nymphs and thus use these for almost all of their trout fishing. Using a slide show presentation we will show you the proper way to achieve a realistic drift with your nymphs at the proper level. Special presentation will be used in order to show you the all-important goal of detecting the trouts’ strikes with the use of a special leader system. We will teach the refinements in using both the dead drifting and swing nymphing techniques and the most productive nymphs to use.

Fishing streamers which match the minnows upon which the trout feed all across the country gives me more large trout than any method I use. With a slide presentation we will show you how to fish streamers in all types of streams in all water levels throughout the season. We will show you the best rods, reels, and tackle for streamer fishing. Since the proper fly lines are an important part of successful streamer fishing we will cover the three different style lines we use and the best ways to fish them. We will show you the streamer flies we find most effective all across the country.

Smallmouth Streamer Savvy Workshop|Jan 18-2014|10a.m. to 12p.m.
During our “On the Stream Smallmouth Bass Schools” many of our beginning anglers catch most of their bass on streamers. This is because the system we teach is easy to learn and it is very effective. Using a slide show presentation we will teach you how to fish streamers for bass with our “sweeping a streamer method”, the “bounce retrieve method”, and the “across stream method”. We will show you three different fly lines we use and the most productive bass streamers.

Nymph Fishing for Smallmouth Bass Workshop|Jan 25-2014|10a.m. to 12p.m.
The three techniques we teach you to fish nymphs in this class are easy to master and will enable you to catch smallmouth in sections of the rivers and under conditions you have never done well. We will use a slide show presentation in order to teach you how to handle your tackle so you can swing your nymphs deeply and detect the strikes quickly. We have developed more than 20 nymphs specifically for this great action which we will show you and discuss the most productive techniques for fishing them. Our special Bright Butt Leaders and Scientific Anglers Indicators are an important part of this system and we will completely cover them.

Smallmouth Popper Logic Workshop|Feb 1-2014|10a.m. to 12p.m.
Catching smallmouth bass on the surface with hard head bugs is one of the most enjoyable forms of flyfishing. We have designed Chuggars, Sliders and Poppers in order to fish all types of water from depths of 2 feet deep to water 5 feet deep. With a slide show presentation we will teach you the techniques for fishing these in all stream conditions from May until October. We will show you the special bass rods, lines and leaders which help you take advantage of this exciting fishing. Using our maps and books we will show you the many rivers throughout Virginia where you can find this great fishing.

With a slide show presentation we will show you the many techniques of fly fishing you can use to catch bass from spring until fall. We will show you the rods, reels, tackle and three different lines which will help you effectively fish drys, nymphs, streamers and surface bugs. We will show you many of the new bass flies we have designed and discuss the best methods to fish these as well as the standard bass flies.

Trout Refresher Workshop|March 22-2014|10a.m. to 12p.m.
Trout fishing becomes very good by this time of the season so this class is designed to help you handle the angling as the season develops. Using a slide show presentation we will discuss the tactics and flies we find effective. We will discuss the aquatic insects upon which the trout feed and show you the artificial flies which we use to match them. We will discuss the tackle which will help you find great trout fishing with special attention on how to balance this to the various nymphs, streamers and dry flies.
