Delayed Harvest & Large Stocked Trout Streams in the Shenandoah Valley

Many trout are still feeding on midges in the delayed harvest and put and take streams.

Rainbows are especially prone to feed on winter midges on warm sunny afternoons.  Watch for their rises in the large flat pools.  If you see swirls the trout are feeding on the emerging midges as they head for the surface. Show these trout a B.H. Copper John Zebra 18 fished upstream with a slow rod lifting action.  If you see delicate rises fish these trout with a Mr. Rapidan Midge 22 and a Mr. Rapidan Crippled Midge 18 using an upstream dead drifting presentation.

Mountain Trout Streams

The Brook Trout are spawning right now and their eggs will not hatch until early March. Please leave these fish alone until March. Many of these fish spawn in the easiest wading areas of the pool which only increases the odds of us stepping on thier redds.
