Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 13, 2022

The native brook trout streams are in good shape. Earlier this week I ran into some extra water on the lower boundaries so I think you will do better by coming into the streams from the Skyline Drive. Get away from the crowds by hiking into the remote feeder streams and take advantage of the dry fly fishing. If you use a cautious approach and pause below each pool, you can often see several trout feeding in each pool.  Suggested flies:  Mr. Rapidan Dry size 14, Spirit of Pittsford Mill size 14, Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 14.  If you want to fish a dry with a dropper--use one of the dry flies above with an 18-inch dropper fly below such as a Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14 or Copper John (Green) in a size 16. I am using either a Classic 7.5ft 5X or a Mountain 6ft 5X Leader.

If you need help on finding these streams, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park or download my latest video on the Park streams.
