Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 2, 2025

Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 2, 2025

We have several hatches occurring on the native brook trout streams right now-- Quill Gordon, Blue Quill and March Browns. In previous reports we discussed the Quill Gordon and Blue Quill hatches, so today I am going to focus on the March Browns. Many of the march brown nymphs make a mini-migration from the deep water in mid stream to the shallows along the bank in order to hatch. It is often difficult to discern the disturbances we spot along these banks as being trout feeding on nymphs or adults. Therefore I fish a March Brown Dry size 14 with a March Brown Nymph size 14 on a 16-inch 6X dropper below it. Often you will catch trout on both the drys and the nymphs.  Below are several fly specials we are offering to cover the hatches.

All of the streams in the Shenandoah National Park are open to fishing. The stream levels are good by either accessing from the Skyline Drive or the lower boundaries. If you need help on access, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

The upper access to Little Stoney (FS92) is scheduled to be open by Saturday 4/5.

Fly Fishing Schools

We have a few openings in the Mountain Trout Fly Fishing School in the Shenandoah National Park on April 23, 2025. These start at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, VA with a classroom presentation and then proceed on a native brook trout stream in the SNP. A full day of learning!

We have a few opening in the Mountain Trout Fly Fishing School in the George Washington National Forest on April 16, April 28 and May 5. These start at our fly shop in Edinburg, VA with a classroom presentation and then proceed to a native brook trout stream in the GWNF. Same techniques, just fishing a different stream.
