Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - August 12, 2025

I did really well on the native brook trout streams earlier this week. I am going to the streams in the morning when the water temperature is around 62 degrees in the mountains. Of course, some of the mountain streams are getting low so try to fish one of the streams that typically holds up well in the summer months. If you can, fish the stream below where a feeder stream or two feeds into the main stream or on the lower boundaries.   For more information on the access to the streams in the Shenandoah National Park, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park

Recommended flies:

  • Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16
  • Murray's Flying Beetle size 16
  • Mr. Rapidan Ant size 18
  • Stubby Chubby size 18

We are seeing many midges in the mountain streams in the evenings. Watch for rising trout and go one-on-one with these trout using a Mr. Rapidan Midge Dry size 20 on 7X. If you don't see a rise from, just cover the water.

The fly shop will be open limited hours on Wednesday 8/13 and will return to normal hours on Thursday 8/14 from 9am-4pm.
