Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - May 8, 2024

The Light Cahills and Little Yellow Stoneflies are still hatching on many streams. Match the Light Cahill with the Light Cahill Dry or Spirit of Pittsford Mill in a size 16. The Murray's Little Yellow Stonefly Dry in a size 16 matches the yellow stonefly hatch.  Fish these on a Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X or Murray's Mountain Leader 6ft 6X with a slack line cast.  Some of the streams are getting lower so be sure to hide your approach even if you have to get on your hands and knees.  The lower you stay the better chance you have of not spooking the trout. Be sure that you are not fishing behind someone. What they didn't catch--they have already spooked.

All of the streams in the Shenandoah National Park are fishable. For access, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park or stop by the fly. My book includes a chapter on reading the water, hatch charts and the streams listed in alphabetical order with directions on parking and access.

Today was our last Mountain Trout Fly Fishing School for Spring 2024.  We will be starting our Smallmouth Bass Fly Fishing Schools in June.  Click for more info and to register.
