Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 21, 2019

Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 21, 2019

March 22 Update: Both the North and South Fork are currently high and muddy from the recent rains.  We will post updates as the conditions change.

I am now using the S.A. Sonar Sink 30 Warm 200 grain fast sinking head fly line in order to fish my streamers deeply in the back eddies on the smallmouth rivers. This is so productive that I'll often devote a half hour to fishing an eddy which is 6 feet deep and 50 feet in diameter. I use a very slow line hand stripping action to swim my streamers slowly along the stream bottom.

March 21 Post: The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is full but fishable.  With the rains that we are receiving today that might change by the weekend. We will post updates as the conditions change.  The water temperature is still cold so you will need waders.

Good streamers are the Murray's Magnum Hog Sucker size 4, Magnum Darter size 4, and Magnum Gray Ghost size 4.

North Fork at Mount Jackson 3.7ft  flow 538

North Fork at Strasburg 3.15ft  flow 925

South Fork at Luray  3.84 ft  flow 2050
