Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 16, 2025

The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is low, clear and fishable.  The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is low, clear and fishable. We are having better luck on this Fork as it holds three times more water volume than the North Fork. Whichever one you decide to fish, plan to wade as carefully as you can because of the crystal clear and low water conditions. The water temperature is cold enough that we highly recommend chest high waders. The best time to fish is in the afternoon hours after the water temperatures have had time to warm just a few degrees.

Recommended flies for this week:

  • Rubber Leg Nymph, Brown size 6
  • Murray's Hellgrammite, size 4 or 6
  • Murray's Magnum Hog Sucker size 4
  • Murray's Crayfish, Olive size 6
  • Murray's Magnum Darter size 4

Fish these on a Murray's Bright Butt 9ft 2X leader.  A good 9ft 7-weight fly rod is preferred for the smallmouth bass fishing.
