Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 8, 2025

Over the next few weeks the smallmouth bass fishing will start tapering off as the water temperature gets cooler. Frost warning in our area for tonight.  Therefore bring your chest high waders and get on the Shenandoah River while you can. We did get some rain (tenth of inch) overnight but both the North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River remain clear and fishable.  Water levels are still low for this time of year so wade carefully as the bass are wary. Fish in the deeper pools that provide protection for bass but are close to a good food source with lots of minnows or crayfish.

We have been going to the South Fork for most of our fishing as it holds three times more water than the North Fork.

Recommended flies:

  • Rubber Leg Nymph, Brown size 6
  • Murray's Hellgrammite, black size 6
  • Murray's Crayfish, size 6
  • Murray's Strymph, Olive or Black size 4
  • Murray's Magnum Hog Sucker size 4
