Stocked Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - January 10, 2019

The stocked trout have been in the streams long enough to know how to feed on all of the natural foods in the stream. This can be very exciting because on warm afternoons there are often an assortment of natural insects flying about these streams. I find they are more likely to take large flies like the Yellow Humpy size 12, Red Humpy size 12, and Irresistible Dry size 12. Fish these below the riffles and in the tails of the pools.

Sometimes running a nymph below the dry is very effective. To do this I fish the dry on a Classic 9ft 4X Leader then come off the bend of the hook using an improved clinch knot with 24 inches of 4X mono and attach a nymph to this. Good nymphs are the Murray's Olive Caddis Pupa size 12, Murray's Adams Nymph size 12 and Mr. Rapidan Olive Soft Hackle size 12. Experiment fishing this rig upstream dead drift on the sides of the incoming riffles. In some cases fishing this combo across stream with a slow twitching action can bring strong strikes from large trout.

This is exciting for winter trout fishing. Both Back Creek and the Bull Pasture have this winter fishing.

All of the local trout streams have good water levels and are fishable.
