Stocked Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - January 3, 2019

The local stocked trout streams are full but fishable. We are still getting the olive mayfly hatch on these streams.  If I see a trout rising to take a natural blue wing olive mayfly then I will tie on a Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 18 or a Blue Wing Olive Baetis Dry size 18.  If I see a splashy rise that indicates the trout were taking the natural emerging mayflies just below the stream surface.  For underwater flies I like to use a Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Olive size 16 or Shenandoah Soft Hackle Partridge size 16. I dress the whole leader up to within 6 inches of the fly with Scientific Angler Fly Floatant and cast the fly 2 feet upstream of the feeding trout. Then I watch the trout closely for the strike.

Another effective ploy is to fish a two fly rig. I attach my dry fly to a 9ft 6X leader and then tie 24 inches of 6X tippet to the bend of the dry hook. Then I attach my nymph. I fish this upstream dead drift and watch the trout for the strike.

Passage Creek in Fort Valley was last stocked on December 28 including the delayed harvest area. Refer to page 56 of my Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams book for information on this stream.
