Stocked Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 16, 2025

The local stocked trout streams are low and clear but fishable. The VA DWR continues to stock streams throughout Virginia with rainbows, browns and some tiger trout. So grab your rod and enjoy the day. Wade as carefully as you can so you don't spook the trout. Fish downstream with drys, nymphs or streamers.

Recommended flies for this week:

  • Mr. Rapidan Dry size 18
  • Copper John, Zebra size 18
  • Rubber Leg Nymph, Brown size 8
  • Murray's Crayfish, Brown size 10
  • Cress Bug, size 16
  • Murray's Marauder (olive or black) size 12

Visit VA DWR for the latest stocking schedule.

The brook trout are spawning, therefore I do not recommend fishing the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park at this time.

April and May are prime time to fish the native brook trout streams for water levels and hatches.  Which is why we conduct our fly fishing schools during April and May.  Spring 2026 Dates are open for registration! Click links below for more information.

If you want to learn more about the native brook trout streams before next Spring here are some options.
