Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report --April 9, 2025
Share
Lets start with the native brook trout streams. Despite the cooler temperatures this week, anglers are picking up some natives in the mountain streams on drys and nymphs. I would recommend fishing in the afternoon after the water temperature has had time to come up. Just make sure that you are not behind someone. What they didn't catch, they have already spooked. The water levels are holding up and you can come into the streams from the Skyline Drive or from the lower boundaries. If you need help on access to the streams in the SNP, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park. Recommended flies to match the hatches: Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14, March Brown Dry size 14, Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis, Black size 14, Bead Head Mr. Rapidan Nymph size 14, Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph, Brown size 16, March Brown Nymph size 14. Fish these on a Murray's Mountain Leader 6ft 5X.
Fly Fishing Schools:
- April 23, 2025 we have a few openings in our Mountain Trout Fly Fishing School held in the Shenandoah National Park.
- We have a few openings in our Mountain Trout Fly Fishing School held in the George Washington National Forest on April 28 and May 5.
Now lets move onto the stocked trout streams. Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg was just stocked yesterday 4/8. Passage Creek in Fort Valley was stocked last Friday 4/4. Some anglers are picking up some nice rainbows. Jigged Copper John size 14, Olsen's Blowtorch size 14, Bead Head Prince size 14, Murray's Marauder Olive or Black size 10, Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite size 8 are working for the rainbows and browns. Water levels are perfect.
