Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - August 26, 2026

We have had several anglers doing well on the native brook trout streams this week in the Shenandoah National Park.  The stream levels are low and the trout are wary so use a stealthy approach. Water temperatures are holding in the low 60's. Best access is by coming into the streams from the lower boundaries of the Shenandoah National Park. 

 For more information on access to the Park streams, see the book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park. We are using ants, beetles and adding midge patterns to our box. Fly sizes in 16, 18 and even 20 are doing well.

• Griffith Gnat size 16, 18
• Mr. Rapidan Ant size 16 & 18
• Murray's Yellow Jacket Dry size 16
• Mr. Rapidan Midge size 18, 20
• Birchell's Hatching Midge size 20

Fly Fishing Schools on the Native Brook Trout Streams — Spring 2027

We are booking students in our fly fishing schools for Spring 2027. If you want to learn more about fly fishing for native brook trout, then these schools are for you. We offer them in two different locations. Each school includes a classroom presentation followed by a hands-on experience on a native brook trout stream. Fly Rod & Reel Outfits are provided for the school.
