Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - August 6, 2025

The native brook trout streams are holding up because of the frequent rains this summer. There are many streams in the Shenandoah National Park to fish for native brook trout. Try to explore different areas and different streams. If you need help on access, stop by the fly shop or see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

Recommended flies:

  • Murray's Flying Beetle size 14
  • Mr. Rapidan Ant size 14
  • Stubby Chubby size 14
  • Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16
  • Murray's Purple Dun size 16

Fish these on a Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X or Murray's Mountain Leader 6ft 6X.

Recommended Tips:

  • try not to fish behind someone (what they didn't catch, they have spooked)
  • sneak, sneak, sneak into the streams so that you are not spooking the trout
  • consider using a dry and a dropper (nymph) rig if you are not catching them on the drys alone
  • fish in the morning hours before lunch for best water temperatures

Little Stoney Creek west of Edinburg is fishable by coming into the stream from the top or bottom access.  Use the same flies as mentioned above for the SNP.
