Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - July 24, 2025

The native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park are holding up well with the extra rains we have been receiving.  Some are still running at fuller levels than normal but you can always go into the streams from the Skyline Drive or upper reaches to get ahead of the extra water.  Recommended flies: Murray's Flying Beetle size 14, Mr. Rapidan Ant size 14, Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16, Shenk's Cricket size 14. Most anglers are doing well by using a dry with a nymph as a dropper. Copper Johns, Olsen's Blowtorch Barbless and Perdigons are recommended nymphs.

For more information on the SNP streams, see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park which includes stream access, hatch charts, and tips on reading the water.

The local stocked trout streams are at perfect water levels. Even though they do not stock these streams in the summer, you might still be able to land a rainbow or brown leftover from the spring stocking. Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg and Passage Creek in Fort Valley are clear and fishable. A Murray's Marauder size 10 in olive or black, Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16, and Olsen's Blowtorch Barbless are recommended flies.
