Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - Update March 25, 2023

Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - Update March 25, 2023

Mountain Trout Streams -  There are Epeorus pleuralis (Quill Gordon) mayflies hatching along the streams now.  Fishing a Mr. Rapidan Parachute size 14 upstream dead drift right into the lower part of the riffle will catch the trout.  I am finding that by using a dry with a nymph as a dropper is the best way to go. The Mr. Rapidan Parachute or Murray's Purple Dun in size 14 are easy to see on the water and the Mr. Rapidan Emerger and Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14 work well when fished alone or as a dropper below the dry flies listed above. Fish these on a 5X leader.  Update from the Shenandoah National Park about road closure.  Please check their Facebook page for updates.

3/25/22  Press Release: Shenandoah National Park wildfire contained
LURAY, VA – Several Big Meadows area trails and Rapidan Road remain closed today while crews continue to work on the remnants of a wildfire that started Thursday afternoon. The fire affected just over 13 acres and was contained by NPS firefighters and a crew from the United States Forest Service late Thursday evening.
Power has been restored to the Big Meadows area where several facilities opened for the season today. Big Meadows Wayside, Campground, and Picnic Grounds, as well as the Lewis Mountain area are all now open. A power line in the area of the blaze necessitated a temporary power outage.

All of the Shenandoah National Park is open for fishing by coming in from the Skyline Drive or by coming in on the lower boundaries of the Park. If you need help on access stop by the fly shop or see my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.  I only have a few openings in our On The Stream Trout Schools for Spring 2023 so make your reservation today.  If those dates don't fit your schedule, then consider taking a guided trip with us.  Visit our website for more information.

Stocked Trout Streams - The VA DWR continues to stock different streams throughout Virginia each week day.  To see the latest list of streams stocked, see their website.  All of the local stocked trout streams are clear and fishable. Heritage Day is April 1 so keep in mind that these heritage day streams such as Passage Creek will be stocked on March 31 but not open to fishing until April 1. Use a Murray's Marauder size 12, Dark Stonefly Nymph size 14, or Copper John Nymph size 14 in the stocked trout streams.  If you need help with access, stop by the fly shop or see my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams.
