Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 4, 2026

The stocked trout streams are full but fishable. With the extra flow we are using heavier nymphs and streamers around the riffles. Starting right below the riffles, cast across stream.  After your fly sinks deeply swim it across the stream bottom by stripping it 4-inches every 4 seconds.  Recommended flies: 

  • Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite, black or brown size 6 or 8
  • Murray's Roadkill Nymph, skunk or olive size 6 or 8
  • Jigged Squirmy Wormie
  • Olive Dragonfly Nymph size 6

Now let's move onto the native brook trout streams.  The warmer temperatures later this week will get every angler in the mood to be on the small streams.  The first hatch occurs this month. The Quill Gordon nymphs are growing rapidly and some are moving to the lower part of the riffles. A few of these are washed into the main stream and the trout are ready to take them quickly. A very effective technique is to fish a Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14 upstream dead drift, landing it right at the lower edge of the riffle.

Other recommended flies for the native brook trout streams:

  • Perdigon Nymph, Olive size 14 or 16
  • Bead Head Prince Nymph size 12 or 14
  • Olsen's Barbless Blowtorch size 16
  • Jigged Tungsten Hare's Ear Nymph size 14
  • Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14

Prime Time to fish the native brook trout streams is April and May. While the hatches and water levels are ideal. 

Spring 2026 Mountain Trout Fly Fishing Schools in the George Washington National Forest.  These schools offer a full day of learning.  Each school starts at 9am at our fly shop in Edinburg, VA on scheduled dates for a classroom introduction on tactics, equipment, reading the stream and knots.
