Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - May 28, 2025

If you plan to fish for native brook trout in the Shenandoah National Park then I recommend coming into the streams from the Skyline Drive or upper regions for better water levels. The lower boundaries still have some extra run off from the rains and there are still a few closures. See the list below.  See my book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park for more information on access to the streams. Have a variety of dry flies and nymphs in your box and consider using a dry with a dropper if you are comfortable with it. Recommended flies include: Murray's Flying Beetle size 14, Mr. Rapidan Dry size 14, Little Yellow Stonefly size 16, Bead Head Prince Nymph size 14, Copper John, Zebra size 16, Perdigon Nymph size 16

From the Shenandoah National Park  5/28/25 at 11:00am--The following trails and areas are temporarily closed until further notice:

  • Skyland Horse Trail (mile 49.4)
  • The Appalachian Connector Trail near Hawksbill Gap parking area (mile 45.5)
  • Old Rag Parking Area (boundary access from Nethers Road)

Please note: Old Rag Parking Area is closed. Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) issued a closure for Nethers Road. While VDOT works to repair sections of Nethers Road that were washed out, access is restricted to local traffic only. Unauthorized vehicles may interfere with VDOT repair operations and risk further delays or damage. Non-local travel is strictly discouraged. Please respect the closure to ensure safety and expedite critical road repairs. For the latest updates, click here

Little Stoney Creek west of Edinburg is good by coming into the stream from FS92. This gets you above the extra water.  Use the same flies that I recommended above.

Now let's move onto the stocked trout streams. Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg has a little extra water today and a little color but it is fishable. I would recommend accessing the stream around the Columbia Furnace area. Passage Creek in Fort Valley has the same conditions--a little extra water and some color but fishable.  I recommend using Murray' Tungsten Bead Marauders in size 10, Jigged Tungsten Hares Ear Nymphs, and Bead Head Prince Nymphs on the stocked trout streams.

If any of the conditions become too high or muddy for good fishing, we will post updates.
