Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - November 27, 2024

The rainbows and browns in our stocked trout streams feed on small minnows in the riffles. The Betsy Streamer size 10, Mr. Rapidan Streamer size 10, Shenandoah Simple Streamer (Skunk) and Shenandoah Simple Streamer (Silver Ghost) are all effective in these areas. Fish them on a Classic 9ft 4X leader. The local stocked trout streams like Big Stoney west of Edinburg and Passage Creek in Fort Valley are clear and fishable. Wade very carefully so you do not spook the trout with the very clear water that we have. The DWR continues to stock trout throughout VA, see their website for the latest schedule.
Early this week I rode over to the Shenandoah National Park to check out the native brook trout streams. The water temperature was around 42 degrees and with the colder temperatures anticipated next week, I expect that will put a hold on the native brook trout feeding. The water levels seem to be holding up. With winter approaching, be sure to watch for updates on road and trail closures in the Shenandoah National Park before planning any trips.
The fly shop will be closing at 1pm on 11/27, closed Thanksgiving Day, normal hours for Black Friday 9-4 and Saturday 9-3.
Prime time to fish the native brook trout streams is April and May when the water levels and hatches are ideal. If you want to learn more about fly fishing for native brook trout, you have some options:
