The local stocked trout streams are low and clear but anglers are still catching some nice rainbows and browns. Fish downstream with the recommended flies below. Wade as carefully as you can.
- Mr. Rapidan Dry size 18
- Murray's Dark Stonefly Nymph size 12
- Copper John Nymph, Zebra size 16
- Murray's Marauder (olive or black) size 12
- Rubber Leg Nymph, brown size 8
Visit the VA DWR website to see the latest streams stocked.
If you are fishing Passage Creek in Fort Valley, I just want to point out that there are two sections--a delayed harvest area (all fish must be put back) and a put and take section (you can keep fish per regulations). So that everyone gets to enjoy the stream, please follow the regulations.
The brook trout are spawning, therefore I do not recommend fishing the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park at this time.
April and May are prime time to fish the native brook trout streams for water levels and hatches. Which is why we conduct our fly fishing schools during April and May. Spring 2026 Dates are open for registration! Click links below for more information.
