Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 7, 2026

Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - October 7, 2026

Let's start with the stocked trout streams. Not much has changed since the last report. The water levels are low and clear. The DWR continues to stock streams throughout Virginia, so check their website for the latest schedule. Water temperatures are cool enough that hip waders are highly recommended.

Recommended flies for the stocked trout streams:

  • Blue Wing Olive Dry size 18
  • Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16 or 18
  • Murray's Flying Beetle size 16
  • Dave's Hopper, size 12
  • Copper John, Green size 14
  • Bead Head Prince Nymph, size 12
  • Murray's Strymph, olive or black size 10
  • Rubber Leg Nymph, Brown size 8

A Murray's Classic 9ft Leader is recommended.  Water levels are low across the region and very clear, so wade carefully.

Now let's talk about the native brook trout streams. The brookies start spawning these month, so we not fish these streams from now until the end of the year. Anything that we can do to preserve and protect the brookies during this time will ensure a better fishing next Spring when the water levels and hatches are ideal.
