Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - September 2, 2026

The native brook trout streams are low and the trout are very wary. Use a cautious approach and stay low. Water levels are best by coming into the streams from the lower boundaries of the Shenandoah National Park. With these extremely hot days, plan to fish early mornings before the water temperatures rise.

Rising trout do well with dry flies such as:

• Mr. Rapidan Midge Dry size 18
• Griffith Gnat size 16
• Mr. Rapidan Dry size 18
• Murray's Little Dark Stonefly Dry size 18
• Murray's Flying Beetle size 16
• Mr. Rapidan Ant size 16, 18 

If you are not see rising trout, a technique I like to use:

• Tie a Murray's Moth size 14 or 16 on a Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X Leader then tie a Pheasant Tail Nymph size 18 on a 16-inch dropper rig below the dry fly.

We are booking students in our fly fishing schools for Spring 2027. If you want to learn more about fly fishing for native brook trout, then these schools are for you. We offer them in two different locations. Each school includes a classroom presentation followed by a hands-on experience on a native brook trout stream.
