Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - September 23, 2026

The native brook trout in the Shenandoah National Park are very wary and the streams are low but anglers are able to land a few by using the right flies and a stealthy approach. Most anglers prefer to fish close to the parking but if you are able, take a hike up the mountain to the high gradient sections (usually mid-mountain). The trout are less spooky where the stream tumbles from one pool to the next in these areas. A good topo map is very helpful. National Geographic Map #228 is what we recommend in the fly shop.

Keep in mind that the native brook trout start spawning in October and most anglers choose to leave these streams alone during the fall months. Every little step that we can do to help preserve these beautiful natives will allow us better fishing for the upcoming year.

• Griffith Gnat size 16
• Copper John, Zebra size 16 or 18
• Pheasant Tail Nymph size 16

We are booking students in our fly fishing schools for Spring 2027. If you want to learn more about fly fishing for native brook trout, then these schools are for you. We offer them in two different locations. Each school includes a classroom presentation followed by a hands-on experience on a native brook trout stream.
