Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - September 6, 2023

In case you haven't heard by now, Shenandoah National Park’s streams and rivers are closed to fishing due to low stream flows and high water temperatures. This closure is being implemented to ensure the long-term health of the fish populations in the park. This went into effect 8/31/23 and will remain in effect until we get a significant amount of rain. We will post updates as they are available.

I have had phone calls and emails asking about other trout streams to fish in the area. There are several native brook trout streams in the area but they are extremely low as well and not worth fishing at this time of year.  Prime time for the native brook trout in Virginia is April to mid-June.  That's when the water levels and hatches are ideal.  That is our reasoning for conducting our On The Stream Mountain Trout Fly Fishing Schools in the Spring.

The stocked trout streams (for rainbows) are not stocked in the summer because of the high water temperature.  They will start the stocking schedule again in October through May.  Again these streams are very low and not worth fishing at this time.

Murray's Fly Shop will be closed September 9-18 for vacation.  No online orders will be shipped during this time. We will resume shipping upon our return on September 19.  No stream report will be posted next week. Thank you for your patience.
