Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - July 29, 2026

Despite the rain showers the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park remain low and clear.  Plan to fish in the mornings as the water temperatures are cooler.  If you get to the stream and the water temperature is 67 or higher, plan to fish another day or go to a smallmouth bass river. The trout are wary so a stealthy approach is needed, so stay low and sneak. Water levels are better by coming into the streams from the lower boundaries.   A good reference book for hatch charts, reading the water, and access to the streams is the book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

• Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16 or18
• Mr. Rapidan Midge Dry size 18
• Murray's Flying Beetle size 16
  
• Mr. Rapidan Ant size 16 or 18
• Murray's Oakworm size 16
  
• Murray's Housefly size 16

Fish these on a Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X Leader. Mash the barbs down on your flies and try to return the brook trout to the water within 30 seconds.
