Fly Tying Weight and Size Chart

Fly Tying Weight and Size Charts | Material Weight Comparison

Because fly tying materials aren't manufactured to a single system-wide standard, finding consistent sizes and weights for beads, coneheads, and metallic eyes can be a challenge. Sizing can vary significantly from one brand to the next—and even between different production runs from the same manufacturer.

To take the guesswork out of your fly tying bench, Murray’s Fly Shop compiled this comprehensive fly tying weight and size chart. We independently weighed several samples of each bead, cone, and eye on this list to give fly tiers a reliable, real-world reference point when building balanced fly patterns.

Understanding Fly Tying Weight Measurements

To help you calculate precise sink rates and rod-weight pairings, all measurements on our charts are published as an average weight in milligrams (mg).

During our testing, we found standard manufacturing variances within the same brand to be roughly +/- 5mg. For quick conversions to other common measuring units, use this quick reference:

  • 1 Gram (g) =

  • 1,000 mg =

  • 1,000 mg =

Whether you are tying heavy streamers for bass, weight-matching brass vs. tungsten beads for tactical Euro nymphing, or selecting the perfect dumbbell eyes for crayfish patterns, use the charts below to dial in your fly recipes.

This fly tying material weight chart is an ongoing project and is updated regularly as new inventory and manufacturers are tested.

Fly Tying Guide: How to Match Bead Sizes to Fly Hooks

When looking at our fly tying bead size chart, you will often notice an overlap in recommended hook sizes. For example, a 3.2 bead can fit anywhere from a size #12 down to a size #16 hook.

Choosing the right combination comes down to your target water conditions, fly profile, and specific hook styles. Use these pro-tips to dial in your fly patterns:

1. Upsizing vs. Downsizing Your Fly Tying Beads

  • Downsizing (e.g., #16 Hook + 2.0mm Bead): Best for shallow, slow-moving water or highly technical fisheries. Choosing a smaller bead creates a realistic, slim profile ensuring the bead weight doesn’t overpower the natural silhouette of the fly body.

  • Upsizing (e.g., #16 Hook + 2.8mm Bead): Perfect for fast water, deep pockets, and heavy Euro nymphing rigs. Maximizing the tungsten bead weight plunges your nymph into the strike zone instantly, which is often more critical than perfect biological scale.

2. How Fly Hook Style Impacts Bead Selection

  • Hook Shank & Wire Gauge: Always consider the specific anatomy of your fly fishing hooks. Long-shank nymph hooks (like 2X-long) or heavy-wire jig hooks often require stepping up or down a bead size. This ensures the bead sits snugly behind the hook eye without crowding the hook gap or blocking the point.

3. Slotted Beads vs. Countersunk Beads

  • Standard Hooks: Use countersunk beads for traditional straight-shank nymph, wet fly, or streamer hooks. The drilled cone shape fits perfectly around standard hook bends.

  • Tactical Jig Hooks: Use slotted tungsten beads for modern jig hooks featuring a  or bend. The specialized slot allows the heavy bead to slide cleanly around the aggressive bend, keeping your fly riding hook-point-up to prevent snags.
