Fly Casting 101 – Beginner Fly Casting Class in Virginia

Do you want to improve your fly casting skills or brush up on your existing fly fishing techniques? Join us at Murray’s Fly Shop in Edinburg, Virginia, for our Fly Casting 101 Class. This hands-on introductory fly casting class is designed for anglers who want to learn the fundamentals of fly casting, improve their accuracy and technique, and gain confidence on the water.

Whether you are new to fly fishing or simply want to refine your casting skills, our experienced instructors will teach you essential fly casting techniques, casting fundamentals, fly-fishing knots, and tackle rigging.

What You'll Learn in Our Fly Casting Class

During this beginner fly casting lesson, students will learn and practice:

• Standard fly casts and basic casting techniques
• Roll casts for situations where a traditional backcast is difficult
• Curve casts for presenting flies around obstacles and in challenging conditions
• Shooting line casts for increasing casting distance
• How to properly rig a fly-fishing outfit
• Essential knots for attaching backing and fly line to a fly reel
• Basic leader and fly-fishing tackle setup

What's Provided

Murray’s Fly Shop provides everything you need for the casting portion of the class, including:

• Professional fly casting instruction
• Fly rod and reel outfits for use during the class
• Hands-on fly casting practice and demonstrations

Prefer to use your own equipment? You are welcome to bring your own fly rod and reel so our instructors can help you become more familiar with your personal fly-fishing setup.

Fly Casting Class Location and Schedule

Meet at Murray’s Fly Shop in Edinburg, Virginia, at 10:00 a.m. on scheduled class dates.

Once everyone arrives, we will head to our casting lawn for the first portion of the class, where you will receive hands-on instruction and practice fundamental fly casting techniques.

The second portion of the class will return to the fly shop for demonstrations and instruction on fly-fishing tackle selection, Rod & Reel rigging, knots, backing, fly lines, and leaders.

The class concludes at approximately 12:00 noon.

Important Information

Because the fly casting portion of this class takes place outdoors for the first hour, please come prepared for changing weather and outdoor conditions. Conditions may include wind, colder temperatures, mud, wet grass, and uneven terrain.
