Using the Guides Choice Fish Release

  • Keep the fish in or near the water.
  • Grasp the tippet no more than 18" away from the fly (Closer is better)
  • While holding the release tool in the opposite hand, hook the Release Tool over the tippet
  • Slide the Release Tool to your fly while lowering the tippet with the opposite hand
  • Continue with a smooth motion allowing the release tool to seat at the bend of the hook
  • This does not involve a quick "snap of the wrist" or any turn of the wrist movements.  Simply move your two hands (Tippet in one hand, Release Tool in the other) away from each other while lowering the tippet toward the water while maintaining some tension on the tippet.

We keep the Fish Release Tool on a retractor or sitting in a tray in the boat for quick access.

Note: This tool will not work if the fly/ hook are not visible in the outer part of the fishes mouth.
