Smallmouth Bass Fly Tying Class: The Minnow Changer

Master one of the most effective patterns in the smallmouth bass world today—the Minnow Changer. This advanced fly tying workshop at Murray’s Fly Shop in Edinburg, VA, is designed for tyers looking to elevate their craft and tackle complex, articulated streamers.

Why the Minnow Changer?

The Minnow Changer (a variation of the famous "Gamechanger" style) is renowned for its lifelike swimming action. Led by our expert instructor, Brandon, you will learn the technical nuances of building multi-sectioned bodies that trigger aggressive strikes from trophy smallmouth.

Workshop Details & Registration

  • Location: Murray’s Fly Shop | Edinburg, Virginia

  • Time: 10:00 AM (See schedule for upcoming dates)

  • Skill Level: Intermediate (Basic fly tying experience recommended)

  • Requirement: Pre-registration is required as class sizes are limited to ensure personalized instruction.

What’s Included in the Course

You will receive:

  • Professional Instruction: Step-by-step guidance from Brandon on articulating shanks and blending materials.

What to Bring

  • As this class is geared toward intermediate tyers, the tying supplies and materials are not provided. Students are required to bring their own vise, bobbin, and tools.
  • A material list is available upon request if you would like to bring your own materials or we will have supplies available for purchase before the class starts.

What You’ll Learn: Mastering the Articulated Minnow

The Minnow Changer is more than just a fly; it is a system of movement. In this workshop, Brandon breaks down the "Changer" philosophy so you can apply these skills to any articulated pattern.

Advanced Tying Techniques Covered:

  • Shank Articulation: Learn the precise method of connecting multiple shanks to create a seamless, lifelike swimming "spine."

  • Tapering & Profiling: Master the art of trimming and layering materials to achieve a realistic baitfish silhouette that tracks straight in the current.

  • Material Management: Discover how to blend synthetic and natural fibers to maintain a natural look that triggers strikes in clear water.

  • Fouling Prevention: Brandon will show you the "shop secrets" to ensuring your tail sections don't wrap around the hook during high-speed casts.

  • Finesse Finishing: Learn how to securely seat 3D eyes and finish the head for maximum durability against hungry aggressive smallmouth bass.

Why Take This Class?

While the Minnow Changer is incredibly effective, it can be intimidating for solo tyers due to the number of steps and specific material proportions.

"After doing two streamer flies in this class, I have the confidence to tie these at home." — Tedd

By the end of this session, you won't just leave with a fly; you’ll leave with the technical blueprint to tie any articulated streamer in your box.

Ready to elevate your fly tying?

Space is limited to ensure Brandon can provide one-on-one feedback at every step as you tie your own Minnow Changer.
