Murray’s Heavy Hellgrammite: The Ultimate Smallmouth Bass Fly

Proven Precision for Deep Pockets and Fast Water

The Murray’s Heavy Hellgrammite isn’t just another fly—it is the result of years of on-the-water testing to create the most productive smallmouth bass pattern ever tied. Designed specifically to reach the "strike zone" quickly, this weighted version of our signature fly is a must-have for any serious warm-water angler.

Why the "Heavy" Style Works

While standard flies often drift over the heads of trophy fish, the Heavy Hellgrammite is tied with extra weight to penetrate deep pockets and current breaks where large Smallmouth Bass and Trout wait for a meal.

How to Fish the Murray's Hellgrammite:

The Upstream Dead-Drift: Cast into the deep pockets directly below riffles. Allow the fly to tumble naturally along the bottom. This mimics a hellgrammite that has been dislodged from the rocks—an easy meal for a waiting predator.

The Down-and-Across Swing: Cast at a 45-degree angle downstream. Use a slow, six-inch stripping action to create the "undulating" motion that makes this ostrich-herl pattern so famous.

The "Trout Streamer" Secret: Don't leave these in your bass box. This pattern is a sleeper hit on large Western trout rivers in the Rockies and Alaska. It is an exceptional streamer for targeting large Brown and Rainbow Trout that are looking for a high-protein calorie boost.

Choosing Your Color

We offer the Murray’s Hellgrammite in three distinct colors because water clarity and bass preferences change throughout the season.

Color Best Conditions
Black The classic choice; high visibility in most water types and a perfect silhouette.
Olive Ideal for clearer water or rivers with high vegetation and algae growth.
Brown Best for matching the natural "earth-tone" larvae found in rocky riverbeds.
