As the streams cool in September, the trout feed much more aggressively. The foliage is still thick and insects such as ants, beetles, and mountain wasp are present along our streams in great numbers.
I use a Shenk's Cricket which is a perfect match for the natural mountain wasp. The Murray's Flying Beetle is well taken by the trout since they are accustomed to feeding on the 200+ natural beetles along the streams. A Mr. Rapidan Ant matches the natural ants and seldom lets me down. I fish all of these on 6X leaders.
