The Bullpasture and Hidden Valley of the Jackson is giving good dry fly fishing action with Shenk's Cricket Dry size 12 and Letort Hopper size 12 early in the mornings when the streams are cool. The trout are very wary so use a very cautious approach and wade slowly as your fish your way upstream.

In order to find the sections of mountain trout streams where you can expect good fishing as the streams get low at this time of the year, go to the high gradient sections of the streams. You can locate these on your topo maps. Generally they are located in what I call "mid mountain", which is half way between the top and the bottom of the mountain. Trout in these areas are less wary than those in the long flat pools. I am doing well in these areas with the Murray's Flying Beetle sizes 14 and 16. I use Murray's...

The North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are both providing good fishing with surface bugs at dusk. On the North Fork of the Shenandoah River, the West bank downstream from access point #4 (Near Dr. Truban's Vet Clinic) is exceptionally good. On the South Fork of the Shenandoah River upstream from access point #11 (Seakford) along the East bank is exceptionally good. My best three bugs now are the Shenandoah Blue Popper size 4, Murray's Frog Chugger size 4 and Murray's Chartreuse/Black Bass Popper size 6. Fish these tight against the shaded banks where the water is two...

The Hidden Valley of the Jackson and Bullpasture are giving good action. By fishing Letort Hopper size 12 and Shenk's Cricket Dry size 12 along the shaded banks with a gentle upstream fly-twitching action will bring some good trout to the surface. The most productive areas are the shaded banks where the water is two to four feet deep. Passage Creek is discolored.

For this time of the summer the mountain trout streams are holding up well. To find the coolest water temperatures and the best fishing, get to the streams shortly after daylight before the sun raises the water temperatures. I am doing well with the Murray's Flying Beetle size 14 and size 16 in addition to the flies I discussed last week. These flies include Murray's Oakworm Dry size 16, Murray's Moth Dry size 16 and Murray's Housefly size 16. Using a stealthy hands and knees approach to each pool will help you catch the large trout.
