Mountain Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 2, 2020

With the Epeorus mayfly duns and spinners both on the water and the emergers coming up we are getting outstanding fishing on the warmer days. An excellent way to take advantage of this wonderful fishing is to fish a Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14 on a 7 1/2 ft Classic 5X leader. Then I tie a Mr. Rapidan Emerger size 14 onto an 18 inch 5X mono dropper below the dry fly.  Stream Updates: Due to overcrowding the Shenandoah National Park has closed access on many of  the lower Park boundaries.  The Skyline Drive is still open.  See the...

The smallmouth are spreading throughout the streams with many seeking protection behind the ledges and in the deep pools below bridges and dams. Fish a Murray's Marauder in pearl, black or olive in a size 6 tight in below the ledges along the stream bottom.  I would recommend using a Sink Tip III line with a Murray's 6ft 2X Fluorocarbon Leader. Both the North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are clear and fishable.  The water is still cold so do not expect to catch a lot of fish but this is usually the time of year you catch...

Stocked Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - April 2, 2020

The Murray's Crayfish size 6 and 10 I mentioned last week can help you catch some large trout around the boulders in the deep pools. I use a Sink Tip III line with a 6ft Murray's 3X Sinking Leader to crawl the crayfish below the edges of the boulders. Big trout feed here especially early in the morning and late in the evening. All of the local stocked trout streams are clear and fishable.  Please be respectful of others and follow the CDC recommendations of social distancing.

There are so many Epeorus mayfly duns and spinners on the streams that if you are using my "pop strike" or just release your trout gently so they don't spook the other trout, you can often catch several nice trout in each pool.  Check the lip carefully for riseforms because at normal water levels the largest trout in the pool will be on the lip feeding station. Fish a Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry or Mr. Rapidan Spinner in size 14 on these streams. Important Notice:  The Shenandoah National Park has waived the entry fee to the Park during the COVID-19....

Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - March 26, 2020

The back eddies occasionally have fast currents along the center of the river and it is best to use a Sink Tip III line with a Murray's 6ft 2X Sinking Leader in order to fish streamers deeply here. The slower and deeper I fish my streamers, the larger fish I catch. The Murray's Magnum Creek Chub, Magnum HogSucker and Magnum Darter all in size 4 are outstanding.  If you have my book Virginia Blue Ribbon Streams, there are many access points listed on page 11 for the North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River. Be sure to bring your...
