Update May 17--Both The North Fork and the South Fork of the Shenandoah River are too high and muddy to fish because of the heavy rains we have been receiving.  We will continue to post updates as the conditions change.

Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report- May 8, 2018

Some very exciting smallmouth bass fishing I get this time of the year comes from those sections of the river where there are small feeder streams entering the main rivers. One feeder on the North Fork of the Shenandoah River close to Edinburg is ten feet wide. One several miles upstream is thirty feet wide. However, they all contribute many minnows to the main rivers. I like to wade or float to within fifty feet of what we call the "mouths" of these feeders. Big bass cruise in and out of these areas so I fish them with big flies...

Stocked Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report- May 8, 2018

There are a broad variety of mayflies hatching on Back Creek and the Bullpasture and you can catch many of the trout by giving them a good cross section of colors in dry flies. This is part of what I designed the Murray's Drake series of drys for. John Snyder, one of the finest anglers I have ever known and close friend, was a master of this hatch on Falling Springs. He out-fished the rest of us by fishing a soft hackle all day even when many trout were taking the duns. A good tactic to cover all our your needs on this hatch is to fish a Murray's Yellow Drake size 16...

Stocked Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report- May 1, 2018

There are a variety of natural caddis pupa larva available to the trout in many stocked trout streams. Big Stoney Creek West of Edinburg and the Hidden Valley of the Jackson have especially large caddisfly populations. I like to fish a two or three fly rig on the streams by starting right below the riffles and in the tails of the pools. Retrieve these with a slow twitching action. Good flies are the Murray's Olive Magic Caddis Pupa size 14, Murray's Tan Magic Caddis Pupa size 14 and Murray's Caddis Larva size 14.
