The aquatic insects are tapering off in our streams but fortunately the number of terrestrial insects are increasing. For example, one hot July afternoon when I was fishing Big Spring Creek in Pennsylvania a thunder storm came in and blew many grasshoppers onto the stream. For the next half hour it appeared that every big trout was feeding on grasshoppers. I put on a size 12 Letort Hopper and caught one large trout after the other.
There are many oakworms, inchworms, natural beetles and ants along our Blue Ridge Mountains during the summer and the trout take advantage of them.
